Your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a counseling and referral service availabe to assist in handling personal and workplace problems. Life isn't easy, and everyone can use a helping hand at some time.

All District of Columbia Government employees and members of their immediate family can use the services. For children under the age of 18, the counselor will meet with the parent(s) and make appropriate recommendations and/or referrals.

You can speak with a counselor about anything you wish to discuss. Typical topics include:

  • Children 
  • Marital or other relationship problems 
  • Financial problems 
  • Alcohol/drug abuse 
  • Work stress 
  • Parenting 
  • Elder/Child Care issues 
  • Conflicts at work 
  • Depression and anxiety 
  • Grief and loss issues 
  • Anger 
  • Career issues

The counselor you meet with will help you sort things out and assist in devising a plan of action. We can put you in touch with community resources, suggest reading materials, help you find a treatment provider, and offer encouragment when times are tough.
All information regarding your participation in the program is confidential and does not become part of your personnel record.

To make an appointment to see a counselor, simply call one of the numbers listed below:

The person you speak with on the phone will obtain some basic information from you, then schedule a face to face visit at a time convenient for you. You may meet with a counselor for up to four visits.

You can meet with a counselor at a location most convenient for you:

At COPE's main office in Washington DC at 1120 G Street NW, Suite 550, (Metro Center Metrorail stop) as well as 900 2nd Street, NE, Suite 203 (short walk from Union Station Metrorail stop.)

Or, you can meet with a counselor in Southeast DC, Prince Georges County MD, Silver Spring, MD or Arlington, VA.

Your participation in the EAP is provided at no cost to you. Any assistance you may need that is outside of the EAP can be covered through your health insurance, sliding fee scale payments, and/or self-help gorups, to the extent possible.
But remember, anytime you meet with an EAP counselor, there is no cost to you.

You will be granted administrative leave by your supervisor to attend the first EAP meeting. If you wish to voluntarily seek assistance without your superviosr's knowledge, you may use sick or annual leave to attend your appointment.

Appointments are available from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm, Monday through Friday. In addition, our phone lines are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you call after hours and your need is urgent, you will be able to speak with a counselor immediately. If your after hours call is a routine business call, then our staff will be glad to take a message and someone will call you back the next business day.
